In this photo, our 3rd-year Animal Science students are doing a practical where rectal palpation is practiced on a cow to determine if she is pregnant. Rectal palpation helps with herd management because it allows you to adjust your planning according to the number of pregnant animals. A farmer can thus determine whether his animals are pregnant and according to this decision which cows should be put back with the bull or should be artificially inseminated again.
